Easter Monday

6 Apr

My Constant Person has recently fulfilled his dream and bought SAAB convertible.

Unfortunately, so far the weather hasn’t been accomodating enough to have the roof taken down. Until yesterday that is.

After family breakfast we went for a drive. With the roof down and scarf on my head. We were headed to the small town at the seaside and went for a walk.

The sea was so calm, it looked more like a lake. I like to think that this small trip was a preview of how this summer is going to look like. Driving to the countryside, lakes and beaches. Sun and relax.

mad men

18 Mar

My current TV obsession.

Once upon a time in the city of New York, long before political correctness there was an advertising company. Situated on Madison Avenue it brought the name on them: Mad Men. Or if you want the truth…they coined the name.

I read that in US a trend based on Mad Men style was created; clothes and gadgets. It is indeed appealing. However, what I find most attracting is the absolute honesty regarding social rules.

As I said, loooong before political correctness.

I can’t wait till Friday evening when I am going to treat myself to a marathon of first season.

the group

14 Mar

Before Sex and The City there was The Group – the story of 8 female graduates from Vassar College between 1933 and 1940.

Location?

Well, duh. New York City.

It’s a surprisingly honest tale of making something of oneself in times of economic breakdown, Hitler’s shadow and the fact that school is over. Suitable marriage or love affair, women’s doctors and contraception, nursing a baby over giving it a bottle, psychoanalysis, New Deal, money, lesbians, communism, cooking and theatre. Freud, Roosevelt,Mussolini, Trotsky.

The book made me think about choices I made once I got my fancy degree. And about what it meant to be a woman in the ’30 and how some things just failed to change.

Available on Amazon.

Dream Map

9 Mar

I am a proud co-founder of women’s group in my company. We try to organize many events to help women develop themselves and move on with their dream career. One of such events took place last Saturday and was run by one of our female managers. The workshop was called Dream Map and I’d like to share with you the experience.

The idea is that if you visualize your dreams and put them in physical form they are more likely to come true. Magic? Hell no, say I and my MA degree in psychology. The studies proved already that the likelihood of achieving one’s goals increases sharply once those goals are written down. Dreams are just a more abstract form of goals and using pictures instead of words just another way of getting things done.

Making your Dream Map is easy and fun. Apparently there is a number of ways of making them but here is what we did on Saturday and what I finished in my own living room:

Gather old magazines and newspapers.

Acquaintance yourself with the Bagua. Given place on your Dream Map is going to represent the corresponding square of the Bagua. One word of clarification here. From what  I was told the square in the very middle represents the idea of perfect you.

Now chose and cut out of the papers symbols of each Bagua square. It can be as abstract or as concrete as you wish.

And stick them in the appropriate parts of your map. Voila!

In my map I used a lot of symbols that are readable to me only. It somehow makes it more of a secret. Now, I heard that some people put the map away and come across it a few years later only to discover that most of the dreams came true. Others prefer to look at it every day. I intend to do the latter, therefore I chose the paper that corresponds with the color of my bedroom walls.

Now, I understand that this kind of activity is not for everyone. However, if you like setting and putting down your goals this might just be worth a try.

Do let me know if you have any questions. I am no expert but I know whom to ask.

Have a good Tuesday everyone!

ghost writer

7 Mar

Roman Polanski, one of the most famous Poles, has always had a gift for mystery crafting. Rosemary’s Baby and you need to say no more.

Ghost Writer does not disappoint. What seemed a bizarre choice of actors (Pierce Brosnan and Kim Cattrall along with Evan McGregor, really?) proved to be an excellent one. I think what really makes people like this movie is that the story it tells is so very believable. There’s no exaggeration in emotions, words, actions. It’s all very straightforward, one step is a result of a previous one. However, at the same time the atmosphere of mystery is being maintained throughout the whole film.

Recommended.

diet breakfast

3 Mar

It’s probably the first time ever that I feel genuine need of loosing a few kilo. They are a result of contentment that became part of my life around the time when good job, great boyfriend and new apartment made an appearance. I probably wouldn’t even freak out so much if it wasn’t for my clothes (jeans in particular) that show exactly how much said contentment I gained.

Last time I flirted with dieting I ended up at the doctor’s with hypersomnia and subsequently with jojo effect so this time around I leave it to professional. I signed up the designated portal (Vitalia.pl) and got myself a specialist who comes up with detailed menu for every day and is always there to answer my questions.

My goal is not only to lose a bit of weight but just as well to acquire healthy eating habits. Whenever I think of that a scene from “The L word” comes to my mind. The one when Jenny rejects Tina’s muffins and makes this shocked and appalled face when saying “I don’t eat that. Those are CARBS”.

So I might end up going around and pointing to random food and beverages doing the Jenny’s face and feeling all superior.
